Dear members of the Arts community,
Bonne rentrée! This year, we are ringing the Fall 2020 semester from both Montreal and around the world as we begin classes remotely. After the challenges we have all faced in the last few months, we are looking forward to an academic year filled with renewal and promise ahead. This year, we welcome four new professors to our ranks, as well as over 2,000 new Arts students from across Canada and across the globe.
Our incoming students are beginning their studies at McGill at a very significant time in our world. In the Faculty of Arts, we are as committed as ever to providing our students with tools to better understand the world, to engage with our communities, to improve society, and to make a positive impact on the world. McGill’s commitment to innovation in teaching and research is as high a priority as ever, and we look forward to continuing to facilitate interdisciplinary initiatives across the university, within our own faculty, and with other institutes and academic establishments around the world.
I am grateful to all members of the Arts community for their adaptability and ingenuity during these last months. Our students swiftly transitioned to learning online and demonstrated their resilience in the face of rapid change. Our professors quickly adapted to teaching their courses in a remote environment and have continued to refine their remote teaching skills over the summer by participating in workshops given by McGill’s Teaching and Learning Services. Our numerous administrative and support staff rapidly adjusted to working from home and ensured the smooth operation of the Faculty of Arts during a challenging time for us all. I am thankful to each of you for your commitment to maintaining McGill’s position as a top-tier institution at which to learn, to teach, and to work – even at a distance.
No matter what the future holds, the Faculty of Arts and the University at large are here to support you and will work to quickly adapt to the situation at hand. For students, the Office of Advising and Student Information Services (OASIS) is only an email away. For the latest developments on COVID-19, please visit the University’s COVID-19 FAQ, which contains information specific to students, staff, and faculty. To keep up to date with the latest from the Faculty of Arts, visit our website for news and announcements, or follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
