25th Anniversary of AMARC: Development and Empowerment through Community Radio

The World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters, AMARC, in collaboration with Media@McGill, partners and stakeholders, organises the international symposium « 25th Anniversary of AMARC : Development and Empowerment through Community Radio » in Montréal, Quebec, Canada on November 7th, 2008. It will take place at the McGill Faculty Club and Conference Centre.

It was in Montreal that community radio activists met, in August 1983, for the first World Assembly of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC), to realise that the event reflected the existence of an embryonic world movement of community radios. Since then and after nine World Assemblies, the community radio movement has become a substantial and recognised global communication sector that has a vital social impact in making the world a better place.

The international symposium « 25th Anniversary of AMARC : Development and Empowerment through Community Radio » to be held in Montréal, Quebec, Canada on November 7th, 2008 will bring together community radio practitioners, non-governmental organisations, development agents, scholars and other stakeholders, from across the world, to reflect on the social impact of community radio in contributing to democratisation and sustainable development. The symposium will also reflect on and reinforce the international contribution of Canadian community radio stakeholders drawing on their specific experiences to consider how can AMARC best contribute to respond to new challenges such as globalisation and the growth of media concentration, the transition to digital and new media and the emergence of new global social movements.
