Later Chinese Art, 960-1911 (ARTH 358)

This course will introduce students to Chinese art from the 10th century to the 20th century in a wide range of media including architecture, painting, calligraphy, sculpture, ceramics and furniture. It intends to give students an opportunity to profile the arts of China from the Song (960-1279) to the Qing (1644-1912) Dynasties in historical, social, economic, political and religious context. The course will be divided into equal quarters, which respectively explore the visual culture of the Song (960- 1279); Yuan (Mongols 1260-1368); Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (Manchus 1644-1912) Dynasties. We will look into the arts, artists, theory, patrons, and their profound influence on the stylistic changes from the Song to Qing. The course emphasizes critical thinking, active class discussion, museum experience and teamwork.
