This course focuses on European art from the mid-18th century to the mid-19th century. We will study artistic transformations in relation to the intellectual, scientific, industrial, social, and political revolutions that defined this period. We will explore the changing role of the artist, art academies, exhibitions and the art market, artistic discourse including the rise of art criticism and modern aesthetics in relation to the work of artists such as Füssli, Wright of Derby, West, Goya, Greuze, David, Peyron, Delacroix and many others.
