On behalf of R. Bruce Lennox, Dean, Faculty of Science:
The Winter 2016 session of the CFSIA has been cancelled.
The basis for this difficult decision is the following: The CFSIA is a complex endeavor with associated complex financing. Over the last two years, the CFSIA organizers have systematically applied money-saving economies to the program, without compromising its fundamental academic features. The program, however, is now running a deficit, and the forecast for the coming academic year predicts an even greater deficit. This deficit principally originates in the significant erosion of the Canadian dollar cf. the US dollar. As you are probably aware, the Cdn $ is now at an 11 year low cf the US$. This is relevant because most of the program costs are paid out in US$. Although the Fee Advisory Committee recently approved a fee increase for the program, this will not be sufficient to avoid another sizable deficit in 2015-2016.
I assure you that the final decision to cancel the Winter 2016 field semester was not made lightly. We intend to use the coming academic year to rebuild the program, both in terms of securing sound funding and in formulating a vibrant program that meets the expectations of students and faculty.
We look forward to offering the Winter 2017 version of the CFSIA program and we hope that we can count on your continued interest and support.
