The ability to balance work and play has always been a hallmark of the McGill student. Good thing too, because there are so many ways to get involved outside of class, you might find it hard to choose!
Sports & athletics
At McGill, the highest level of sport meets the highest level of academics. Our rich athletic tradition includes more than 100 Olympians, and our school has played a key role in the creation of three of the world’s most popular sports: football, hockey and basketball.
McGill’s athletics facilities rank among the best in the country, including a fully-equipped fitness centre, two outdoor playing fields, a hockey and skating arena, tennis and squash courts, an indoor swimming pool, indoor and outdoor tracks and much more.
With 29 intercollegiate teams, numerous competitive clubs, 700 intramural teams and an extensive Fitness and Recreation program, there’s truly something for everyone when it comes to staying active.
Maybe you’re an aspiring journalist. Maybe you’re a LGBT rights activist. Maybe you’ve just been mulling over trying your hand at Quidditch. No matter what your interest may be, McGill is sure to have the club or activity for you.
The undergraduate Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) sponsors nearly 300 clubs—from robotics teams to music associations. So whether your passion is politics, sustainability, or cooking, you won’t have to look far to find others who share it.
Want to start your own club? You can do that too!
For McGillians, community engagement isn’t just an abstract idea—it’s a way of life. From a program that provides dental care to Montrealers in need, to an initiative that teaches swimming to developmentally challenged children, our students, faculty and staff are constantly making a difference in impactful ways.
If you’d like to get involved, there’s no shortage of opportunities. Tutor a fellow student, raise funds for McGill’s massive annual United Way drive, or volunteer your time at a local charity. Your efforts will not only help others, but also give you priceless real-world experience.
Events and activities
On any given day, there are a wide variety of events taking place all over campus. Here are just a few examples of what you can expect to find:
Concerts and shows
McGill is home to talented musicians, actors and other artists who stage countless shows open to the public. The Schulich School of Music puts on upwards of 700 musical performances each year!
McGill has been honoured to welcome the likes of Al Gore, Malcolm Gladwell, and Justin Trudeau, among many others. We can’t wait to see who the future brings.
And so much more
