MOOCs and GROOCs on the move

McGill’s initial experiment with Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, has been a success and the first offering, Food for Thought, will be repeated next year. More than 32,000 people from 160 countries, with an average age of 35 (a bit younger than normal) signed up for the MOOC. Almost 1,800 people completed all elements of the course, and another 7,000 people completed at least one assignment or test.

The Academic Work Group on Innovative Pedagogy, an advisory group to the Provost, was established in October 2012 to identify and make recommendations about technology-based teaching and learning at McGill.  The Work Group, which met during AY 2012-2013, has identified innovative pedagogy at McGill; reviewed various MOOC providers to identify and recommended for consideration those best aligned with McGill’s mission and ambitions; and assisted with the dissemination of information to the campus communi

McGill is part of the edX consortium of 36 leading institutions from North America, Europe, Asia and Australia dedicated to offering online interactive classes to enhance education on their campuses and for a worldwide community of learners.

Founded by Harvard and MIT, edX is a not-for-profit enterprise with an open source platform that makes it possible for partner institutions to offer high-quality, non-credit Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) at no cost to edX students. The edX courses also provide a research environment for educators to explore how students engage and learn in a global online context. Opportunities for peer interaction as well as high-quality technology-based learning materials provide students with exciting opportunities for learning from the world’s best universities

MOOCs are not just canned courses or recorded talking heads. They provide new methods for:

  • packaging course materials,
  • facilitating peer-to-peer learning, and
  • conducting assessments in order to improving teaching.
