Dr. Avi Friedman's presentation: "Retooling Cities for the 21st Century"Dr. Avi Friedman is a Professor in the School of Architecture at McGill. Dr Friedman received his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Town Planning from the Israel Institute of Technology, his Master’s Degree from McGill University, and his Doctorate from the University of Montréal. In 1988, he co-founded the Affordable Homes Program at the McGill School of Architecture where he teaches. He also holds an Honorary Professor position in Lancaster University in the U.K. Avi is known for his housing innovation and in particular for the Grow Home and Next Home designs. He is the author of 14 books and was a syndicated columnist for the CanWest Chain of daily newspapers. He is the principal of Avi Friedman Consultants Inc. and the recipient of numerous awards including the Manning Innovation Award and the World Habitat Award.
Dr. Manuele Margni's presentation: "Challenges in moving towards more sustainable production"
Dr. Manuele Margni is an Associate Professor in the Mathematical and Industrial Engineering department at Polytechnique Montréal. He is co-chair holder of the International Life Cycle Chair (a research unit of CIRAIG) and also teaches Life Cycle Assessment and sustainable manufacturing classes. His research activities aim to develop life cycle based tools to support sustainable production and consumption with a focus on the assessment of life cycle impacts, risks and benefits related to existing and new products, processes, and services. In parallel with his research activities, Manuele gained considerable experience working together with industry co-founding two spin-off: Ecointesys and Quantis International, where he still retains a key advisory role.
