McGill University Health Centre

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is an absurd one.

As a society we have to accept that rigorous evaluation of a new treatment is essential... Skipping this step may seem like a compassionate act, but it can have devastating consequences.

Mission

Overview

The Health Technology Assessment Unit was established by the MUHC in January 2001. Its purpose is to advise the hospital in difficult resource allocation decisions, using an approach based on sound, scientific technology assessments and a transparent, fair decision-making process. Consistent with its role within a university health centre, it will publish its research when appropriate, and contribute to the training of personnel in the field of health technology assessment.

In the spirit of collaboration and complimentarité the MUHC and le Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) entered into an agreement in December 2005 that promotes close collaboration and joint execution and approval of reports when appropriate. Members of the CHUM professional staff who work closely with the TAU are appointed to TAU with affiliate status.
