SP0063: Sustainability Symposium 2

Status: COMPLETED February 2012 - April 2012

For the past two years, we have organized and executed an annual symposium on sustainability research and innovation at McGill. The purpose of the symposium was to bring together academics at the forefront of sustainability research (including McGill faculty), graduate and undergraduate students, and other members of the McGill community to encourage and facilitate networking, conversations, and create new research opportunities for students.

This year, the second annual symposium was a one-day event, hosted at Thompson House on the McGill downtown campus. Over 100 people (students, faculty and members of the community) participated in the event. More than 15 departments were represented. The day began with three talks by experts in the field of Urban Sustainability (this year’s theme) and Sustainability Research. These speakers then participated in a panel discussion with moderator, followed by a complementary lunch during which participants were encouraged to view student poster presentations. The day concluded with a social networking activity and group discussion centered on the theme of improving sustainability in cities. Overall, the event generated very positive reviews and feedback. We hope that this event continues at McGill as an annual event at which students can present their research in the rapidly expanding field of sustainability.
