Not only are valuable square metres wasted that could be converted into an all-round, enriching use, but the alternative, lawn, is an environmental horror, requiring ''the exorbitant consumption of water and fertiliser to overcome natural forces''. The average North American lawn, he tells us, requires 895 litres of water a day, and that figure increases in warm or dry weather."
