In 2013, Laird Hall made great strides towards implementing a culture of recycling and composting among its residents. Now in 2015, this SPF project aims to continue the stakeholder participation process so that participatory waste management can become institutionalised at Laird Hall, and see that the students who participate will go forth with a more sustainable attitude towards waste management at McGIll.
The 'Permaculture Classes' project implemented a new curriculum surrounding the practice of purmaculture at McGill's Macdonald Campus. The classes consisted of 8 sessions, held on alternate Saturdays from January to April 201, during which student were introduced to the permaculture principles and applications, and discovered the growing movement of permaculture projects already happening in Montréal.
The 'Out-of-the-Garden Project' (OGP) originally established a student-run café on Macdonald Campus which serves breakfast and lunch once a week with ingredients sourced locally from McGill student farming projects. With their third round of funding, the OGP purchased ingredients and kitchen supplies that allowed them to double their production and offer their meals twice a week in the Winter 2014 semester.
McGill actively encourages its community to cycle to campus and to learn all the skills they need to maintain this habit. The SPF has provided the means to create an outdoor bicycle repair station with a bike repair rack and to two manual tire pumps, located outside the bookstore. The rack itself is made with 100% recyclable materials and is supplied with eight theft-resistant tools allowing cyclists to make minor repairs immediately and locally.
'Linking Action and Research on Sustainability' (LARS) is a new science communication initiative which aims to provide visibility for McGill scholars working on positive contributions/solutions to sustainability related problems. The goal is to help McGill scholars to engage in outreach and share their work with a broader audience, through brown bag lunch events, videos, blog posts, and workshops, with a focus on social media and online promotion.
