Food Systems Administrator (SP0007)

Status: COMPLETED May 2010 - September 2011

With the support of the Sustainability Fund, McGill Food and Dining Services (MFDS) hired a Food Systems Administrator in August 2010 to consolidate the food purchasing function for the department, to create more sustainable & local food purchasing at McGill, to bring fresher, tastier and more nutrient-rich food to the McGill community, and to support a culture of sustainability at McGill.

In a collaborative and multidisciplinary attempt to pull together Montreal-based research, we are organizing a working group that is critically approaching food systems, security and sustainability at different levels: institutions, Montreal and its peri-urban and rural surroundings, as well as the broader ‘Global South,’ which is facing immediate issues of food crisis.

Farmers' Market 3 (SP0076)

The McGill Farmers’ Market (MFM) aims to bring delicious, local, seasonal produce to McGill's downtown campus, with weekly Farmers' Markets throughout September and October, and a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project from July to October.

Campus Crops 3 (SP0072)

Campus Crops is a student run urban gardening initiative at McGill University's downtown campus. We grow food on campus, by students, for students.

Biodigester Feasibility (SP0082)

Status: ONGOING May 28 2012 - present

Macdonald has the benefit of an organic waste stream comprising both food waste from campus buildings and farm waste. This duality makes Mac an ideal location for research and experimentation with anaerobic digestion applicable to both municipalities and farm operations.

Cafe Rhizae (SP0060)

Status: COMPLETED November 2011 - January 2012

This project created an innovative protocol on how to grow gourmet oyster mushrooms from spent coffee grounds. They collected used coffee grounds from McGill cafeterias and area cafes, which was used for their experimental research to grow edible mushrooms.
