This first annual symposium will feature guest speakers, a poster session for students to showcase current research, and a “world-cafe” discussion. The keynote speaker is Jonathan Foley, current director of the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota, whose work focuses on complex global environmental systems. This presentation focuses on a key national campaign of Sierra Club Canada that concerns water conservation across the country and management practices on the Island of Montreal.

Cutting Edge Lectures in Science: Is there room for ecological conservation in the Oil Sands of Alberta?
Dr. Stan Boutin discusses the environmental challenges presented by the Alberta Oil Sands. He will use a case study of woodland caribou, an endangered species, to illustrate how powerful land-use planning tools can now give society the information needed to make ecologically informed decisions about how and if conservation and development targets can be achieved.

The Committee on Environment will hold its ninth annual Rethink conference, which traditionally aims to provide the community with information on environmental initiatives on campus by students and the administration, as well as an opportunity to provide suggestions on priority environmental projects to be addressed. Focus this year will be on taking action and the Sustainable Projects Fund.
