The PGSS environment committee presents the film "DIRT!" DIRT! takes you inside the wonders of the soil. It tells the story of Earth's most valuable and underappreciated source of fertility--from its miraculous beginning to its crippling degradation. DIRT! the Movie brings to life the environmental, economic, social and political impact that the soil has. Mix at 5 PM, followed by the film at 6 PM.

The keynote speaker is Jonathan Foley, current director of the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota, whose work focuses on complex global environmental systems. Cutting Edge Lectures in Science: Is there room for ecological conservation in the Oil Sands of Alberta?
Dr. Stan Boutin discusses the environmental challenges presented by the Alberta Oil Sands. He will use a case study of woodland caribou, an endangered species, to illustrate how powerful land-use planning tools can now give society the information needed to make ecologically informed decisions about how and if conservation and development targets can be achieved.
