Transportation

The University's Physical Master Plan's planning and design principles (2008) has an entire section devoted to campus accessibility, including the aim to "use transportation demand management strategies to reduce demand for parking and the need for single occupancy vehicles by promoting a range of viable commuting alternatives, including public transit, bicycling, walking, and carpooling."

Ongoing projects

McGill Security Bike Patrol

McGill Security Services on the Downtown and Macdonald Campus patrol on bicycle during days and evenings in the summer months. In winter, Security patrols in small, fuel efficient vehicles and hybrids, reducing fuel consumption by Security vehicles. Security Services was the first department at McGill to acquire a hybrid vehicle.

Inter-Campus Shuttle Bus

The Macdonald Campus shuttle service provides students with a free alternative to driving. The bus transports students between the Downtown Campus and the Macdonald Campus in approximately 30 minutes and operates on a regular schedule throughout the year.

McGill Bike Loan Program

This free service is available to McGill students, staff and faculty members. Bikes can be loaned from Macdonald Campus Security for a maximum of 3 hours; just bring your McGill ID card!

Cycling is a fun way to travel around the Macdonald campus or get some exercise while exploring the many bike trails around Ste. Anne de Bellevue. The 1,900 acres of Macdonald Campus are equipped with over 20 km of both paved and unpaved roads; bikes are great to experience the scenery around the farm, Ecomuseum or the Morgan Arboretum. Bikes can be brought on the Metro and select Commuter trains to bike and ride around the greater Montreal area. Check out the Montreal bicycle trail map for more travel ideas.

Since the program began in mid-June 2003, the number of bicycle loans continues to be impressive, consistently being the best performers in Voyagez Futé's program.

Bike Repair Program

The Flat (in the University Centre) and La Cave (in Solin Hall) are McGill’s very own bike collectives! They teache students and staff to fix their own bikes. The groups both offer workshops for all skill levels, as well as providing the tools necessary to fix the problem. The repair facilities recycle and reuse parts and work to promote cycling as a viable mode of transportation. This service is available to the McGill and Montreal community.
