The neighbourhoods of Montreal are extremely varied, and this can be intimidating for students looking for their first apartment. Our on-line listings are divided into zones, which you can check out on our Off Campus Zones Map [.pdf]. The zone descriptions below will help you get an idea for what makes each neighbourhood unique.

Description

ZONES A/B (Milton-Parc)
A short walk from McGill; both students and non-students; large turnover for single apartments every year, multiple bedroom apartments also available.
ZONES C/D (West of campus)
A short walk from McGill; very affluent urban area with old homes and modern high-rises. 1-4 bedroom apartments; rents very high, but there is less competition.
ZONE E (Around Concordia University)
About a 15 minute walk from McGill; many students; mostly older low-rise apartment buildings. Rents are not very high and there is a little less competition—some good deals are available.
ZONE F (Lower Plateau)
A 15-25 minute walk or 5 minutes by bus from McGill; mostly 2–5 bedrooms flats in duplexes/triplexes; rents can be high as it is a popular area.
ZONE G (UQAM, the Village)
15–20 mins from McGill by public transportation, cheaper rent and more availability.
ZONE H (Hampstead)
40–50 minutes by bus/metro from McGill; affluent Anglophone residential area with above average rents; primarily family homes in which rooms are rented.
ZONE J (Côte-des-Neiges)
30-40 minutes by bus/metro from McGill; an ethnically diverse area with many low-rise apartments & cheaper rents than downtown. Lots of availability.
ZONE K (Around Université de Montréal)
30-40 mins by bus/metro from McGill; an ethnically diverse area with many low-rise apartments where rent is lower than downtown. Lots of availability.
ZONE L (Plateau, Parc Lafontaine)
25 minutes walk/15 mins by bus from McGill; mostly Francophone area; cheaper rents & more availability further east.
ZONE M (Mile End)
15–20 minutes by bus from McGill; 2–5 bedrooms flats in duplexes/triplexes; area much like the Plateau but slightly less expensive and more availability.
ZONE MAC (MAC Campus)
Represents areas around Mac Campus such as St. Anne De Belle Vue, Senneville, Kirkland etc) and apartment are much cheaper around MAC campus than around Downtown campus).
ZONE N (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Côte Saint-Luc)
30-40 minutes by bus/metro from McGill. Middle-class residential area with duplexes/triplexes, small apartment buildings and homes; reasonable rents.
ZONE O (Outremont)
20–30 minutes by bus or metro from McGill; an affluent Francophone residential area with some ethnic groups. Mostly duplexes and triplexes, small apartment buildings and houses.
ZONE P (Old Montreal)
20 minutes by metro from McGill; very expensive lofts; condos in renovated historic buildings.
ZONE R (Rosemont)
30–40 minutes by bus from McGill; 2–4 bedrooms flat, low rise apartment buildings. Slightly less expensive than Mile End area.
ZONE S (St. Henri and Little Burgundy)
15 minutes by metro from McGill. Area is becoming more popular all the time; reasonable rents; mostly duplexes and triplexes and many newer condos.
ZONE T (Town of Mount Royal)
45–60 minutes by bus to McGill; ethnically diverse and affluent residential area; average rents; mostly family homes in which rooms are rented.
ZONE V (Verdun, Pointe Saint-Charles, La Salle)
15–30 minutes by metro to McGill, mixed of working and middle class area that is becoming popular with students. Good availability, mostly duplexes and some newer condos.
ZONE W (Westmount)
15–20 minutes by bus or metro to McGill; affluent Anglophone residential area; rents are high, but good deals on rooms in homes.
ZONE X (Parc Extension)
30–40 mins by bus or metro to McGill; ethnically diverse area with many low-rise apartments & lower rents, lots of availability.
ZONE Z (represents those areas not on the map)
Represents those areas not on our map but can easily commute to McGill to both downtown and Mac Campus. For example, Pointe Claire, Ville St. Laurent, Brossard,Longueuil, Laval etc.
