Welcome to new students and hello to all!

As McGill’s second Deputy Provost (Student Life and Learning), I would like to welcome our cohort of incoming students – and say hello to all of you with a few words about where I come from and how I plan to approach this very challenging position.

I have come to McGill from Concordia University, where I served as Vice-Provost in charge of teaching and learning. I am also a Professor of French Literature here, and my research focuses on the impact of technology on how we understand ourselves.

We have a terrific team in Student Life and Learning, all dedicated to making sure you have the best possible experience at McGill – in every aspect of your student life. I would like to thank them all very much for helping me as I settle in.

As Deputy Provost, my goals are the following:

  • Build on the solid base we have at McGill to be the leader in providing healthy, innovative, stimulating and superior campus educational experiences;
  • Integrate all aspects of SLL into a cohesive learning experience;
  • Use the campus to extend, enrich, and diversify your educational experience;
  • Develop strong, respectful and transparent relationships with all students and all student organizations.

I also want to thank you, in advance, for your feedback and the suggestions I’m eager to receive now and throughout the year. My team or I will respond to all of your emails (though it may take a bit of time) and I will be in close contact with student organizations, which will also provide me with valuable insight into the McGill student experience.

I am very much looking forward to meeting and engaging with as many of you as possible and for us all to have a great year.

Bienvenue aux nouveaux étudiants et salutations à tous!

À titre de premier vice-principal exécutif adjoint (études et vie étudiante), le deuxième à occuper ce poste, je souhaite la cordiale bienvenue à notre nouvelle cohorte d’étudiants et présente mes salutations à tous, en vous transmettant quelques lignes sur mon cheminement et sur la façon dont j’ai l’intention d’aborder les défis de mes nouvelles fonctions.

Nouvellement arrivé à McGill, j’occupais auparavant le poste de vice-recteur adjoint aux études à l’Université Concordia. Je suis également professeur de littérature française à McGill. Ma recherche est axée sur l’impact de la technologie sur la compréhension que nous avons de nous-mêmes.

Nous avons une équipe formidable dans le bureau du premier vice-principal exécutif adjoint (études et vie étudiante). Tous les membres de l’équipe se dévouent pour garantir que votre expérience à McGill soit la meilleure possible – dans tous les aspects de votre vie d’étudiant. J’aimerais les remercier tous de leur aide tandis que je me familiarise avec mes nouvelles fonctions.

À titre de premier vice-principal exécutif adjoint (études et vie étudiante), mes buts sont les suivants :

  • miser sur la base solide qui existe à McGill pour être un chef de file en matière d’expériences éducatives saines, novatrices, stimulantes et supérieures sur le campus;
  • intégrer tous les aspects de Student Life and Learning en une expérience d’apprentissage cohésive;
  • utiliser le campus pour étendre, enrichir et diversifier votre expérience éducative;
  • développer des relations solides, respectueuses et transparentes avec tous les étudiants et toutes les organisations étudiantes.

Je veux également vous remercier à l’avance des commentaires et des suggestions dont vous me ferez part, je l’espère bien, maintenant et tout au long de l’année. Mon équipe et moi-même répondrons à tous vos courriels (même si ça peut prendre un peu de temps) et je serai en contact étroit avec les organisations étudiantes, qui me fourniront également des indications précieuses sur l’expérience étudiante à McGill.

J’espère avoir le plaisir de rencontrer le plus grand nombre possible d’entre vous et d’échanger avec vous, et je nous souhaite à tous une excellente année.

Reporting to the Deputy Provost, Student Life and Learning, McGill’s Student Life and Learning team is comprised of the following Units:

Together, these Units support students inside and outside the classroom by offering essential services, programs that encourage intellectual, social, cultural, and physical development and opportunities to explore local, national, and international interests that complement the academic curriculum.

 The importance of Student Life and Learning initiatives are key at a student-centred University where students are active participants in their learning and development and are offered every opportunity to think critically. With students concerns and interests as the driving force, programs under the Student Life and Learning umbrella encourage a strong sense of community and play a central role in promoting diversity in all aspects of the student experience.
