STI Testing

There are a number of places in Montreal that you can get tested for Sexually Transmitted Infections.  An STI test usually includes a urine and blood test, and typically tests for Chlamydia, Gonnorhea, Syphillis and HIV.  If you are or have been sexually active, and are not sure of your STI status, the only way to know is to get tested. If you are looking to get tested on campus, and you have symptoms, you can come to the Monday to Friday drop-in clinic at Student Health Services in the morning (we open at 8:30am, and spots fill up very quickly). If you don't have any symptoms and just want to get a test done, you can call the Clinic (514-398-6017) and make an appointment with one of our nurses to get tested.

If you would like to go off-campus to get testing for STIs, here is a list of other clinics and resources.

Sexual Assault Resources

Sexual Assault is any unwanted act of a sexual nature.

If you have experienced sexual assault and want to speak someone about it, you can speak with a nurse in the Student Health Clinic about your healthcare options. You can also choose to use the listening and support services of the Sexual Assault Centre of the McGill Students' Society or the Montreal Sexual Assault Centre.

Note: While all services listed below are open to people of all genders, SACOMSS is specifically trained in supporting trans people, and individual experiences of trans people accessing other services may vary.

Obtaining Medical Assistance:

You can choose to get medical and psychological treatment at a hospital or CLSC. These designated medical centres can also give you more information and assistance if you wish to report your assault to the police. If you choose to go to a hospital or CLSC, you can choose which examinations to undergo. Nothing should be done without your consent. You will receive psychological support during the course of your treatment.

Staff will generally give you a medical examination, which consists of:

  • Checking the general state of your health
  • Treating any injuries
  • Detecting any sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections
  • Preventing unwanted pregnancy
  • A gynaecological and/or genital examination may be done

They may also give you a forensic examination if you are thinking of reporting the assault to the police. This consists of:

  • Taking samples that may be biological traces from the assailant (sperm, saliva, blood) to create a forensic evidence kit that may be used if you decide to report the assault to the police
  • You can have the forensic examination even if you have not decided if you want to report the assault to the police. The centre will hold the kit for 14 days, and if you decide to make a report in that time the centre will hand the kit over to the investigator.

If you decide to report your assault to the police, a counsellor can accompany you through this process. They can also provide you with documents justifying your absence from work and school.

You can return for follow-up appointments to assess your physical and psychological state, detect STIs and blood borne infections, and check for pregnancy. A psycho-social follow up will also be recommended.

Other Support Services:

Hospitals and CLSCs can also provide you with a list of organizations that can provide further support. Whether or not you choose to seek medical treatment, you can access SACOMSS' support phone line (514-398-8500), active listening drop-in, and support groups, and the Montreal Sexual Assault Centre's crisis phone line (514-934-4504). At McGill, you can also access Mental Health Services, Counselling Services, and the Office of Religious and Spirtual Life for support.
