McGill Undergraduate Scholarships for Current Students

IN-COURSE AWARDS - FOR STUDENTS ALREADY AT MCGILL

In-Course scholarships, awards and prizes are for students already at McGill University who are in full-time undergraduate degree programs and will be continuing in full-time undergraduate degree programs. In-course scholarships are awarded to students who have excelled in their programs of study.

These scholarships are awarded by the individual faculty scholarships committees, and students should consult the appropriate section of the Undergraduate Scholarships and Awards Calendar for a complete listing of awards by faculty as well as for regulations and information concerning these awards.

The Scholarships and Student Aid Office administers these awards based on recommendations from the faculties. We deposit the funds in the students’ fee accounts and record them on student transcripts.

Every faculty has its own set of criteria for distribution of in-course awards. To acquaint themselves with these criteria and to receive answers to any questions they may have, students should consult with the Student Affairs Office in their faculty.

The following list provides links to the various faculty offices and the chart provides specific information for nine faculties:

DEAN'S HONOUR LIST

Continuing Students

A maximum of the top 10% of continuing students in each faculty based on the combined GPA for the fall and winter terms is named to the Dean's Honour List. This designation, while carrying no monetary reward, is an official University recognition of the student's achievements and is recorded on the transcript. Outstanding students who rank in a maximum of the top 5% of their faculties may also be considered for monetary awards.

Graduating Students

A maximum of the top 10% of the graduating students in each faculty is named to the Dean's Honour List. This honorary designation is based on the cumulative academic record in the graduating faculty and the minimum required CPGA is determined annually by each individual faculty. Individual faculties should be consulted regarding any additional criteria which may be used.

GRADUATION HONOURS - DISTINCTION

If you are graduating with an undergraduate degree, you may be awarded the designation Distinction under the following conditions:

1) you have completed a minimum of 60 McGill credits towards your degree; and

2) you are in the top 25%, but below the top 10%, of your faculty's graduating class of students; this calculation is based on the CGPA.

Note for transfer students: this designation may be withdrawn if your CGPA at another university or in another faculty at McGill is not comparable to the CGPA earned in your graduating faculty.

Note: the Faculties of Education, Dentistry, Law, Medicine, and the Schools of Architecture, Nursing, as well as the Centre for Continuing Education do not assign the designation of Distinction to graduating students.

Note: the designation of Great Distinction is no longer awarded at graduation. Prior to September 2009, Distinction and Great Distinction were awarded at graduation according to faculty-specific regulations. You can find these rules in the faculty chapters of the 2008-2009 Undergraduate Programs Calendar or any earlier version at www.mcgill.ca/courses.

GRADUATING AWARDS

These awards are for students who will be graduating with an undergraduate degree. All awards to graduating students are granted by individual faculties and schools and are included in the In-Course Awards sections of the Undergraduate Scholarships and Awards Calendar.

Monetary awards to graduating students are paid by cheque.

The Governor General’s Silver Medal is awarded to the graduating student who obtains the highest academic standing in a Bachelor degree program (based on cumulative record). It is awarded by the University Committee on Scholarships and Student Aid and bestowed upon the recipient at the convocation ceremony.

Other designations awarded on graduation, such as First Class Honours, Distinction, etc. are based on the cumulative academic record and the CGPA required varies from faculty to faculty; students should consult their own faculty for more information.

Graduating students who wish to find out about funding to pursue graduate studies should consult the Postgraduate Fellowships and Awards Calendar or visit the website at: http://www.mcgill.ca/gps/students/fellowships/
