Information and Considerations For New McGill Admits From Boycott-Affected CEGEPS (06/26/12; updated 07/09/12)

McGill's Scholarships and Student Aid Office is making every effort to accommodate the financial needs of newly admitted students from boycott-affected CEGEP. Using the accommodation scenarios from the university’s Enrolment Services’ plan, the following addresses institutional aid and awards as well as Quebec government aid.

SCENARIO #1

Student wants to complete DEC in August and September full-time and then begin studies at McGill thereafter. They have chosen to defer McGill admissions to Winter 2013.

  • Entrance scholarship offers will be honored as long as student continues to meet eligibility criteria. For Winter 2013 admits, half the value of the scholarship will be paid each in Winter 2013 and Fall 2013.
  • Entrance (need-based) bursary offers will be honored as long as student continues to meet eligibility criteria. For Winter 2013 admits, half the value of the bursary will be paid each in Winter 2013 and Fall 2013.
  • New Entrance Bursary applications will be accepted until October 1st for Winter 2013 admits.
  • Applications  for Québec aide financière aux études (AFÉ) are  available starting early June 2012 for the 2012/13 academic year, with a deadline of 60 days after the end of the study period (i.e., June 30, 2013 if not full-time over summer, or October 31, 2013 if continuing full-time studies over the summer).

SCENARIO #2

Student wants to complete DEC in August and September full -time and then begin studies at McGill thereafter.  They have chosen to defer McGill admissions to Fall 2013.

  • Entrance scholarship offers will be honored as long as student continues to meet eligibility criteria. For Fall 2013 admits, half the value of the scholarship will be paid each in Fall 2013 and Winter 2014.
  • Entrance (need-based) bursary offers will be honored as long as student continues to meet eligibility criteria. For Fall 2013 admits, half the value of the bursary will be paid each in Fall 2013 and Winter 2014.
  • New Entrance Bursary applications will be accepted from March 1 to June 30, 2013 for Fall 2013 admits.
  • Applications  for  Québec aide financière aux études (AFÉ) are  available starting early June 2013 for the 2013/14 academic year (subject to change as per MELS), with a deadline of 60 days after the end of the study period. (In other words, the deadline is June 30, 2014 if not full-time over summer, or October 31, 2014 if continuing full-time studies over the summer.)

SCENARIO #3

Student wants to complete DEC in August and September full- time and would like to concurrently begin studies at McGill part-time in September 2012.

  • Entrance scholarship offers will be honored as long as student continues to meet eligibility criteria, however the disbursement will only commence once the recipient is full-time in their degree program. In most cases, half the value of the scholarship will be paid in Winter 2013 and the remaining installment in Fall 2014. Renewable scholarships will continue on this payment cycle.
  • Entrance (need-based) bursary offers will be honored as long as student continues to meet eligibility criteria. Regardless of the student’s part-time status, their first installment (1/2 the value of the bursary) will be disbursed in Fall 2012 so as not to create unnecessary financial hardship.
  • New Entrance Bursary applications will be accepted until July 31, 2012 to accommodate those students who did not yet apply. Decisions will be rendered within 2 weeks of submission.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE AND PRE-MED NEW ADMITS FROM BOYCOTT-AFFECTED CEGEPS

BSc and Med-P students who:

  • Are completing their CEGEP diploma in August and September and taking three condensed courses at McGill beginning the week of October 1st.
  • Intend to apply for Quebec government aid, Aide Financière aux Études (AFÉ).

Since CEGEP students receiving AFÉ loans & bursaries shall be deemed to have received their winter 2012 aid in full as of the normally scheduled end of term, no government aid is available to defray the student’s cost of attendance to complete their CEGEP diploma in August and September.  However, those students who want to concurrently begin studies at McGill part-time in October 2012 may apply for an AFÉ part-time loan.  Due to the fact that you will only be earning 9 credits in the Fall term, you must complete a separate form from the full-time loans & bursaries application (found under Your On-Line Services section, clicking on Part-Time Forms).

Important: If you have already submitted a full-time application, you must submit a Declaration of Change to remove the information under the section for Fall 2012, leaving the information for Winter 2013 as is. You should then submit an application for the part-time loans; this way you could qualify for part-time loans for the fall and then receive your full-time funding for the winter.

Full-time students who were on AFÉ funding for Winter 2012 and will not be registered full-time for Fall 2012 due to the above scenario, could fall into repayment for their full-time loans.  Most students are eligible to take advantage of AFÉ’s Deferred Payment Program to be exempt from repayment for a 6-month period, during which the government will continue paying interest on your behalf.  Students may contact our office for full details.

QUÉBEC AIDE FINANCIÈRE AUX ÉTUDES (AFÉ)

Instructions about applying to Québec aide financière aux études (AFÉ) can be found on the AFÉ website at http://www.afe.gouv.qc.ca . CEGEP students receiving AFÉ loans & bursaries shall be deemed to have received their Winter 2012 aid in full as of the normally scheduled end of term.

NB: Overlapping AFÉ across multiple institutions is not permitted; therefore no government aid is available to defray the student’s McGill cost of attendance. Students experiencing financial hardship as a result of reduced government assistance may apply for McGill In-Course Financial Aid via the Financial Aid/Awards menu on Minerva and schedule an appointment with a Financial Aid Advisor. McGill loans are available in emergency situations to meet financial need for which government aid would have normally been available had studies not been interrupted.
