Continuing Studies

Important opportunities for growth in Continuing Studies have been identified in areas of language programs, summer programs, and professional development. By building on the School of Continuing Studies' (SCS, formerly CCE) current successes with course offerings in these three categories and tapping into the underserved needs of the marketplace, the SCS estimates a potential net benefit to the University of $2.2 million annually.

Based on SRI recommendations, the Continuing Studies project team will add more sections of individual language instruction and custom courses for corporate, government, and institutional clients. This move responds to increased demand from major clients to increase course offerings both in Montreal and abroad. More course options will also be offered in the summer program, as well as new courses targeted towards new groups such as high school or pre-university students. Professional development programs will be added, designed to satisfy the unmet needs of professionals, to meet stricter government-mandated professional accreditation requirements and to address the shifting demographics of the workplace. These courses will focus on special international projects, a webinar series, a new online course and several intensive workshops.

While the potential for growth is considerable, this opportunity doesn’t come without challenges. Classroom space will need to be renovated or increased. The success of the expansion will depend on an increased level of cooperation and coordination between the SCS and the Faculties. Through on-going and open dialogue, the School of Continuing Studies intends to explore ways of optimizing efficiencies and improving services between itself and McGill’s other academic units, ultimately benefiting the University’s bottom line and the quality of its service to the community.
