A: You can verify which program requirements you have completed by checking the program requirements for majors , minors, honours, and joint honours. Q: How do I sign up for an independent reading and research course?

A: First, you should identify several possible “topics” that you might like to explore within the confines of an independent reading and research course. Second, you should identify a faculty member in the Department of Sociology whom you might like to supervise this course. Third, schedule an appointment with him/her to discuss the possibility. Fourth, submit the requisite form (available in the Department of Sociology main office or online at www.mcgill.ca/sociology/undergrad/forms/) to Joanne Terrasi, Student Affairs Coordinator in 713 LEA by the semester’s add/drop deadline.

Q: How do I sign up for the sociology internship course?

A: First, you need to arrange an internship via the Faculty of Arts Internship Program (www.mcgill.ca/arts-internships/). Q: How do I obtain a letter of recommendation from a professor?

A: First, you need to determine which professor(s) you believe can (and might be willing to) write you a good recommendation letter. Second, you should schedule an appointment with him/her to discuss the possibility. If s/he agrees, you should:

  • ascertain whether there is an official recommendation form from the school/employer to which you are applying (if yes, provide this to the professor)
  • provide the professor with a copy of your transcript, resume and copies of course assignments (e.g., papers) from the course(s) you took with him/her
  • compile a list of deadlines for the materials to be sent off and of the school/employer address(es) and give this to the professor.
