Research Areas

Social inequalities in health; lifecourse research; stratification and mobility; population health; quantitative methods (counterfactual account of causality); social demography (reproductive health).

Biography

(PhD, Duke University, 2004; MSc, Université de Montréal, 2000). Assistant Professor, Joint Appointment in the Departments of Sociology and Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health, at McGill University since 2005.

Amélie Quesnel-Vallée is a medical sociologist and a social demographer with postdoctoral training in social epidemiology. Her research examines the contribution of social policies to the development of social inequalities in health over the lifecourse.

She holds a Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec chercheur-boursier Junior 1 (new investigator) award. She also heads the Canada Foundation for Innovation-funded International Research Infrastructure on Social inequalities in health (IRIS).

In 2005, she received the American Sociological Association Dissertation Award for her Fulbright and SSHRC-funded doctoral research on status attainment, health insurance and socioeconomic inequalities in health in the U.S. With funding from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, she currently studies the impact of private health insurance on general and mental health in select OECD countries.
