Research Areas

Political Sociology, Contentious Politics/Social Movements, Globalization, Labor Politics, France, United States, Latin America.

Biography

(PhD, MIT, 2007) Assistant Professor at McGill since 2007.

Winner of the 2008 Georges Lavau Dissertation Award of the American Political Science Association (APSA) for the best dissertation on French politics defended between 2005 and 2007.

In 2009-2010, Marcos Ancelovici will be a Junior Fellow in the Successful Societies Program of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR).

Ancelovici's research focuses on social movements and the political sociology of globalization. He has carried out field research in France, the US, the UK, Chile, Brazil, and Quebec, on topics as varied as labor responses to globalization, firm localization in the textile, electronics, and publishing industries, transition to democracy, drug dealing in shantytowns, and cultural identity.

He's currently completing a project on the way labor organizations adjust and respond to globalization in France and beginning another project on civil society campaigns to regulate the global economy. More particularly, this new project asks why such campaigns emerge and grow in some industries rather than others and in some countries rather than others; it will address this issue through a comparison of campaigns in the apparel and the consumer electronics industries in France and the United States.
