SKILLSETS Team

Graduate Education Officer

As the Graduate Education Officer, I work with Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Teaching and Learning Services to develop a broad range of Graduate Education Initiatives. I oversee SKILLSETS: a suite of Professional Development Workshops for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. In addition, I provide professional skills development opportunities for faculty members through the Graduate Supervision Workshop Series.

David Syncox

Graduate Education Assistant

I am a master’s student in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education at McGill University and an intern with City Farm School developing schoolyard gardens in Montreal. My research focuses on outdoor learning, specifically the expansion of Forest Schools in North America. At SKILLSETS, I will soon be project lead on the Would You Fund It? Fellowship Consultation Sessions.

Alexandra Taylor

Graduate Education Assistant

Chloe Garcia is in the first year of her PhD in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education. Her research interests surround sex education and media literacy programming. She aims to improve how we teach youth about sexuality, and the popular culture that surrounds them. As a new member of the Teaching and Learning Services team, she has the opportunity to work on exciting projects such as the Learning to Teach day and the Career Services study. 

Chloe Garcia

Graduate Education Assistant

I am a PhD candidate in the Division of Experimental Medicine. I specifically study the interaction between the host and a pathogen to better understand the immune response to infection. As a member of the SKILLSETS team, I have been involved in web design, the creation and delivery of workshops on presentation skills and orchestrating the Learning to Teach Day event.


Erin Lafferty

Graduate Education Assistant

I am a doctoral candidate at the McGill School of Architecture and my research focuses on the history of urban infrastructure. In a previous life, I was a professional Landscape Architect and have taught architecture, urban design, planning and environmental studies in Canada and Ireland. With the SKILLSETS team I provide project support for workshops pertaining to Graduate Supervision.


Heather Braiden

Graduate Education Assistant

I am a doctoral student in the Department of Political Science at McGill University and a student member of the Centre for the Study of Democratic Citizenship. My research focuses on election administration and voter participation. At SKILLSETS, I am project lead on the Would You Fund It? Fellowship Consultation Sessions and provide support for the MUHC research ethics conferences.

 Holly Ann Garnett

Graduate Education Assistant

I am working towards my Masters in Education and Society. My research interests include active learning, mentorship, and informal education. My thesis focuses on youth leadership development in summer camp contexts. My work with SKILLSETS consists of creating the bi-monthly SKILLSETS InfoBulletin and assisting with the coordination and administration of our flagship events.

Katlyn Martin

Graduate Education Assistant


I am pursuing my Ph.D. in Kinesiology and Physical Education. My research focuses on skeletal muscle adaptations to exercise training in health, aging and chronic disease. It has been a pleasure to work with the SKILLSETS team over the last 3 years on projects such as Academic Integrity Day, TA training, and Supervisor-Supervisee relations. I look forward to continuing to grow and learn with the team.

Interim Director, Teaching and Learning Services

Dr. Laura Winer (PhD, Educational Technology) is the Interim Director of Teaching and Learning Services at McGill. She oversees the Graduate Education Initiative including SKILLSETS, a professional development suite for graduate students, and the Graduate Supervision Workshop Series for Professors. She assures coherence and collaboration with other teaching and learning initiatives.
