Dear incoming (or potential!) MLIS student,
The Canadian Library Association McGill Student Chapter would like to welcome you to Montreal, to McGill, and to the MLIS program. As you begin your new life as an MLIS student (or are considering the MLIS at McGill), you will no doubt have plenty of questions, both prior to, and upon your arrival in Montreal. As your CLA student representatives, we are here to introduce you to the professional library community, answer your questions, and help ease your transition into the MLIS program.
The Student Chapter of the CLA serves as a liaison between MLIS students and the professional association. Our mission is to help students become active in the professional library community during their time at McGill. In order to do this we plan events to facilitate and foster relationships between MLIS students and established professionals. In past years, we have invited many local professionals to participate in our career discussion groups. We have sponsored social gatherings of professionals and students, such as our popular cinq à sept (or, for the uninitiated, a happy hour here in Montreal). The CLA Student Chapter also coordinates the Professional Partnering Program http://www.mcgill.ca/sis-students/cla/partnering/, an exciting mentorship program that connects students and information professionals.
You too will have the opportunity to become involved at our first general meeting in September. We need various first-year students on our executive council! We will also be looking for volunteers for our various initiatives and committees.
Once again, please feel free to email us with your questions about courses that interest you, about Montreal neighbourhoods and apartment-hunting, about McGill, or about your general concerns regarding life as an MLIS student. We will do our best to answer them!
