1997-98/NRCP/16 Minutes of the meeting of the APPC Sub-committee on New and Revised Courses and Programs (NRCP) held on Thursday, May 14, 1998, at 3:00 p.m. in Room 110 of the Arts Building. PRESENT: R. Capek, M. Crago, N. de Takacsy (Chair), S. Rytina, C. Madramootoo REGRETS: K. Woodman INVITED: R. Brynen (Political Science) 1. The Agenda was approved. 2. The Minutes of the meeting of April 30, 1998 were approved with the following correction: the last line under item 7, Report from the Faculty of Science should read: "The course 183-407A/B . was approved." 3. Business Arising It was noted that the Major and Minor Concentrations in International Development Studies had been approved by Senate with the change that 154-208A is added to the list of required courses, and the list of complementary courses is modified in consequence. Professor Crago questioned the credit counts for the BN and the BSc(N) program that had been reported to Senate. Professor de Takacsy promised to follow up. Professor Brynen explained the structure and the requirements for the course 160-599 Practicum in Political Science. The committee still had concerns that the course description indicated a workload incommensurate with the credit weight, and Professor Brynen promised a revised description that more accurately reflected the academic work required of the student. The course 405-613 History of Libraries was approved. 4. Reports from the Faculty of Arts (98-NRCP-05-65) (98-NRCP-05-68) 154-326A Ecological Economics 3 credits The change in prerequisites was noted. 106-303A/B Topics in Canadian Studies III 3 credits Some concern was expressed that almost all courses in Canadian Studies are slot courses, but Professor Rytina explained the special character of the Institute and why slot courses are reasonable here even though they wouldn't be in another discipline. The course was approved. 183-498B Humans in Tropical Environments 3 credits This course will come up for approval when submitted by Science. 109-200A History of Communications I 3 credits 109-210B History of Communications II 3 credits The Committee had the following questions about these courses which were being transferred from English to the Graduate Program in Communications: ? Who will be teaching the courses? ? The phrase "all professors" can be given many interpretations. This should be clarified. ? When will the courses be given? The indicated date of September 1997 is clearly wrong. ? Where will the course be listed in the Calendar? The 1998-99 Calendar makes no reference to the 110- version of these courses, nor is there any entry for the Graduate Program in Communications. 101-314A/B Tudor England and 101-394A/B Stuart Britain and Ireland were approved. These courses are the result of splitting 101-314D into one term courses. 127-216A Découvrons Montréal en français and 127-326B Découvrons le Québec en français, were approved subject to the condition that enrolment in these courses would be restricted to freshman students. The following courses were also approved. 104-301A/B Structure of English 3 credits 129-358A/B Kafka 3 credits 129-359A/B Bertolt Brecht 3 credits 151-207C/L/T Ethnography through Film 3 credits 260-307A/B Scriptural Interpretation 3 credits 260-362A/B Contemporary Judaism 3 credits 260-438A/B Topics in Jewish Theology 3 credits 5. Report from the Faculty of Engineering (98-NRCP-05-66) The proposal for a Minor in Technological Entrepreneurship was temporarily withdrawn. 6. Report from the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (98-NRCP-05-67) The following courses were approved: 367-201B Comparative Plant Biology credits 367-220A Introduction to Vascular Plants credits 367-221A Introduction to Fungi credits 367-361B Pest Management and the Environment credits 7. Other Business The Committee discussed various possibilities for routing, modifying, approving and reporting course and program proposals. It is clear that an electronic mechanism would be preferable, and various issues concerning data integrity were raised.
