Curriculum

The M.Sc.A. curriculum emphasizes the understanding of fundamental principles and theories, and their present or potential clinical applications, in addition to the teaching of specific techniques for assessment and intervention.

Building on the program prerequisite courses, students begin with basic science courses in the first year (e.g., Language Development, Language Processes, Anatomy and Physiology of Speech/Hearing) which provide a foundation for more specialized topics and practicum experiences in speech, language, and swallowing disorders as the program advances.

Active participation in the learning process is encouraged by course labs and clinical competencies evaluated by site supervisors.  Students’ ability to critically evaluate basic and applied research is assessed in course exams, research papers, and presentations.

First Year

  • fundamental courses are offered
  • students begin practical training in various settings in the Montreal area (one day a week)
  • students complete a 4-week practicum at the end of the first academic year (usually in a pediatric setting)

Second Year

  • specialized courses are offered
  • one three-credit seminar option must be taken
  • practical training continues in various settings in the Montreal area (one day a week)
  • students complete a 12-week internship at the end of the second academic year (in one or more settings)

A total of 81 credits are required over 2 years. Some courses involve a mandatory Clinical Laboratory.
