Curriculum

The M.Sc.A. curriculum emphasizes the understanding of fundamental principles and theories, and their present or potential clinical applications, in addition to the teaching of specific techniques for assessment and intervention.

Building on the program prerequisite courses, students begin with basic science courses in the first year (e.g., Language Development and Processes, Anatomy and Physiology for Speech-Language Pathology) which provide a foundation for more specialized topics and practicum experiences in speech, language, and swallowing disorders as the program advances.

Active participation in the learning process is encouraged by course labs and clinical competencies evaluated by site supervisors.  Students’ ability to critically evaluate basic and applied research is assessed in course exams, research papers, and presentations.

First Year

  • many fundamental and specialized courses are offered in fall, winter and summer terms
  • students begin practical training in various settings in the Montreal area (one day a week)
  • students complete a practicum during the spring of the first year (often in a pediatric setting)

Second Year

  • more specialized courses are offered
  • practical training continues in various settings in the Montreal area (one day a week)
  • students complete a 60 days internship at the end of the second academic year (in one or more settings)

A total of 82 credits are required over 2 years. Some courses involve a mandatory Clinical Laboratory.
