GIGs: Graduate interest groups

The Faculty of Science introduces a new initiative aimed at graduating undergraduate and beginning graduate students - Graduate Interest GroupS or GIGS. Two inaugural GIGS will start January 2012.

Who are GIGS for? How do I register?

All U3 undergraduate students and all graduate students in the Faculty of Science are invited to sign up via Minerva for the following GIGS. Use the usual Minerva course registration process and select the term "Winter 2012", the subject "FIGI - Fac Sci Grad Interest Grps" and the course number "GIG1" or "GIG2". All GIGS are non-transcript, non-credit courses and are free.

January 2012

FIGI GIG1: Entrepreneurship, Science-based

  • Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30pm, McConnell 103, starting January 18, 2012
  • Organized by Erica Besso, Faculty of Science Research Innovation Officer

This graduate interest group will offer the opportunity to learn about ENTREPRENEURSHIP and the process behind turning science-based ideas into successful products. It takes more than an excellent technology to successfully commercialize a product. Other factors such as freedom to operate, patent protection, market access and requisite infrastructure are equally essential. Meet and discuss what it takes with experienced achievers in that domain.

FIGI GIG2: Science students on the move

During this graduate interest group, various selected topics will be offered to students to discover many engaging working opportunities after graduation. Listen to various speakers and explore the world beyond the Roddick gates.
