On Friday, October 16, 2015, students from across the Faculty of Science presented their research projects at the eleventh annual Undergraduate Research Conference (URC).

This year, forty-six students from across the Faculty of Science participated. They showed their results to fellow students, alumni, and members of the public. Once again this year, the spectrum of students' research projects was very broad, including topics such as:

  • The effects of diverse anti-HIV-1 RNA therapies on HIV-1 production
  • Star Hunting: The Search for Extremely Fast Pulsars
  • Source properties of earthquakes induced by fluid injection near Fox Creek, Alberta
  • Cross-language syntactic violations in adult bilinguals

McGill judges had the arduous task of choosing the victors (see below). The prize ceremony took place in McGill's elegant Moyse Hall, and was followed by a very special keynote address (see also below). The day culminated with a reception for students, friends, and alumni, where everyone celebrated the accomplishments of McGill Science students.

The Faculty of Science was honoured to welcome distinguished distinguished scientist Professor Catherine Potvin to deliver the keynote address at the eleventh annual Undergraduate Research Conference. Her talk was entitled:

“Acting on Climate Change: Solutions from Canadian scholars”

Professor Catherine Potvin (Department of Biology) is a world leader in global change biology. She was among the first to show how changing carbon dioxide levels alter plant biodiversity, implemented the first long-term tropical experiment relating tree biodiversity to ecosystem function, and developed and popularized several advanced statistical techniques. Professor Potvin leads the Sustainable Canada Dialogues initiative, and is a driving force at local, national, and international levels shaping research, policy, and implementation of climate change mitigation action. She was an inaugural Fellow of the Trottier Institute for Science and Public Policy (2013-2015) and holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Climate Change Mitigation and Tropical Forests. Professor Potvin has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, which is the highest distinction for scientists, artists, and scholars in Canada.
