Project title: Genetic analyses of ovarian cancer susceptibility gene candidates

Project description (50-100 words suggested): About 10-20% of ovarian cancers are due to the inheritance of germline mutations in the breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2. Recently, new genetic factors have been proposed to confer risk to hereditary ovarian cancer. Though rarely mutated they collectively may account for up to 5% of hereditary cases. Our group has identified a new candidate genes using whole exome genome sequencing of familial ovarian cancer cases that do not harbor mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2. The objective of the research project would be use bioinformatics resources to select one of the gene candidates identified by exome sequencing and genotype the variant in a set of well-defined ovarian cancer specimens in order to assay the frequency of the variant and assess its relevance as a candidate. The student will be paired with an experienced post-doctoral fellow who will train the student in applying bioinformatics resources for genomic sequencing derived data and performing genotyping assays.

Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.

Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Final grade shall be based on an evaluation of laboratory (or equivalent) performance (40%), a final written report (50%), and an oral presentation (10%) by the supervisor.
