Project title: Identifying the miRNAs activated by WT1 in a model kidney stem cell

Project description (50-100 words suggested): Wilms tumor is a rare hereditary form of kidney cancer caused by the loss of the WT1 gene. Recently, William Foulkes discovered that Wilms tumors can als obe caused by mutations of the gene for DICER, an enzyme which processes non-coding micro RNAs. This implies that WT1 cooperates with the miRNA during normal kidney development. We hypothesize that WT1 activates a unique panel of miRNAs that are crucial for differentiation of renal stem cells. This project will be to identify the micro RNAs that are activated by WT1 in a model kidney stem cells.

Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.

Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Final grade shall be based on an evaluation of laboratory (or equivalent) performance (40%), a final written report (50%), and an oral presentation (10%) by the supervisor. Details of the evaluation scheme will be provided by HGEN to supervisors and applicants.
