Project title: Cancer and stem cell interaction in repair of radiation-induced lung damage

Project description (50-100 words suggested): We are investigating several methods to mitigate and repair lung radiation-induced damage in lung cancer patients who receive radiotherapy as part of their treatment.  One approach is to utilize tissue regeneration approaches. This project focuses on how different environmental and biological factors can affect the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into progenitor lung cells that are able to mitigate lung damage before fibrosis can occur. This is done via co-culture and tri-culture in different mediums followed by testing for specific markers using PCR and immunohistochemical staining.  The main aim is to determine whether or not the route of differentiation changes in a cancerous environment and the factors that may influence that.

Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.

Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): 40% Lab Performance; 10% Oral Lab Presentation; 50% Final Report.
