Project title: Orexin receptors in the chick embryo brain
Project description (50-100 words suggested): Orexins are important for the maintenance of the waking state and many functions in adult animals. We recently showed that Orexins are produced very early in the chicken embryo brain. This suggest a role of Orexins in brain development. To get more insight into this possible role of Orexins, the present project seeks to study the developmental expression of Orexin receptors in the chicken embryo brain. Embryos will be studied at different ages by using immunohistochemistry. This work will identify which brain areas are responsive to Orexins and when these brain areas may become responsive to Orexins. The identity of selected neuronal populations expressing Orexin receptors will be established with double labeling techniques.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Final grade shall be based on an evaluation of laboratory performance (50%) and a final written report (50%).
