Project title: Investigate the role of NLRP7 in the genetic susceptibility to sporadic moles
Project description (50-100 words suggested): A hydatidiform mole is a human pregnancy but with no embryo. Its paradoxical nature has fascinated and puzzled scientists in all civilizations. There are several forms of molar pregnancies. The common form is sporadic and not recurrent. It occurs in 1 in every 600 pregnancies in western societies. Our group identified a causative gene, NLRP7, for a Mendelian form of this condition. Previous work from our group and others indicate that women heterozygous for some mutations are at increased risk for moles and for various other forms of reproductive wastage. The project of the student aims at sequencing the 11 coding exons of NLRP7 in 10 to 20 patients with sporadic moles. The student will learn how to perform PCR, analyze DNA sequences using appropriate software, and annotate them according to official nomenclature. The student will learn to perform his/her work with a Ph.D. trainee or a research assistant and then apply what he/she learned to his/her project. Patients’ materials are ready and the project is well mastered in our laboratory. The project is a good opportunity for students to learn basic molecular genetic methods and contribute to an ongoing project in our laboratory.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Final grade shall be based on an evaluation of laboratory (or equivalent) performance (40%), a final written report (50%), and an oral presentation (10%) by the supervisor. Details of the evaluation scheme will be provided by HGEN to supervisors and applicants.
