Project title: Mapping to spatial variability of permafrost in a northern peatland complex
Project description (50-100 words suggested): With changes in temperature and snow many northern peatlands are beginning to loss permafrost either as an increase in active layer depth or with the complete disappearance of permafrost. This is turn alters the spatial distribution of surface elevation and hence water storage. This should change the distribution of the dominant plant species. In this project we will examine the spatial correspondence among surface elevation, water table depth, active layer depth, and vegetation pattern in the Stordalen peatland complex in northern Sweden. A GIS platform will be used to analyzed data that has been collected in the Stordalen complex since 2007.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): 30% for an introduction and description of the analysis; 70% for the final report
Other project information: The student will work closely with me and one of my PhD students who has collected most of the field data.
