Project title: A Characterization of Entropy in Terms of Information Loss
Project description (50-100 words suggested): We will start by studying basic information theory and quantum information theory. Towards the end of the project we apply category theory to information theory. We show that Shannon entropy gives the only concept of information loss that is functorial, convex-linear and continuous. Furthermore we will generalize this to Tsallis entropy.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Final project 50% and Presentation 50%
Project status: This project is taken. The professor has no more '396' projects this term.
