Project title: Automated Control Platform for Single-Molecule Microscopy Instrumentation
Project description (50-100 words suggested): The Leslie Lab creates accessible approaches to dramatically improving single-molecule imaging. This research project will develop custom computer-control software for microscopy experiments. Through this project, the student will learn to control a wide range of microscopy instrumentation (e.g. solid state lasers, CCD cameras, nano-positioning stages, microfluidics devices) and to automate this instrumentation for new kinds of biophysical measurements. The primary focus of this project will be instrumentation-control, data-acquisition and data-storage software, which will first be developed using virtual devices and subsequently tested using Leslie’s microscopy station. A secondary, collaborative aspect of this work will be to link the developed control-tools with an image processing platform (being developed in a different 396 project). The student will be directly supervised by Dr. Sabrina Leslie (McGill Physics) and collaborative with another student. This project will be co-supervised by Prof. Derek Ruths (School of Computer Science).
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): The final report is 50% of the final grade. A presentation is 25%. A lab book is 25%.
