Project title: Alterations in Deep cerebellar nuclei in a mouse model of SCA6
Project description (50-100 words suggested): Spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 (SCA6) is a devastating neurodegenerative motor disease that is caused by a mutation in a P/Q type calcium channel that is highly expressed in the cerebellum. Degeneration of neurons in the deep cerebellar nuclei (DCN) has been observed in some human patients, and our preliminary studies with a mouse model of SCA6 suggest that DCN cells degenerate after ataxia onset. We will determine the time course of degeneration of DCN neurons and will determine whether this correlates with disease onset.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Lab work: 50%; Final report: 50%
