Project title: Wing disc apoptosis during development in Pheidole

Project description (50-100 words suggested): In many species of ants, the gene networks regulating wing suppression in wingless castes of ants is not conserved. To study these differences in wing development, larvae from various species of Pheidole ants at specific points in larval-to-pupal development will be isolated, and dissected to reveal their wing discs. Apoptosis assays will then be used to study the spatial and temporal onset of apoptosis in wing discs. We hope to gain better understanding of wing polyphenism in ants through comparison of apoptosis patterns between species.

Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.

Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Report: 50%; Lab Work: 25%; Lab Book: 10%; Experimental Design and Outcomes: 15%.

Project status: This project is taken; however students may contact the professor to discuss other possible '396' projects this term.
