Project title: Palaeoclimate Estimation from Plant Leaves of Grasslands National Park
Project description (50-100 words suggested): The project will use a photographic library of angiosperm plant leaf fossils from the Upper Frenchman Formation and Lower Ravenscragg Formation in Grasslands National Park, SK, to estimate paleoclimates of the region at those times. These formations form a contiguous contact at the end Cretaceous mass extinction. The climate estimation just before and after this mass extinction are important to understand what environmental drivers may have been at play before and after the event and how climate may have affected the fall and recovery of biodiveristy in the region. One site from each formation were collected and photographed in August 2013. Approximately 100 plant leaves were recovered from each site. This data will form the basis of entering leaf shape parameters into CLAMP, a program developed specifically for estimating local climate from angiosperm leaves. The project will result in a manuscript to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
