Project title: Mercury Free Microscopy Light Source Testing
Project description (50-100 words suggested): New solid state light technologies including light emitting diodes (LEDs) are now powerful enough and cover enough of the visible light spectrum to be used as light sources for fluorescence microscopy. This allows researchers to move away from traditional mercury based light sources to greener mercury free solid state sources. This project involves the testing of mercury free light sources for stability, power consumption and light output for research based fluorescence microscopy. Results will be compared to previous results from both mercury based and non-mercury based sources to ensure quality control and applicability of mercury free sources for high quality research microscopes.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): 50% for the written report and 50% for the laboratory performance
