Project title: Functional characterization of endothelial cell in diabetic neuropathy
Project description (50-100 words suggested): Previous animal studies and patient data have revealed that the vascular system in diabetic nerve is abnormal and damaged. It is also known that inflammation plays a major role in diabetes, as anti-inflammation works to relieve neuropathic pain. In this study, our aim is to show whether vascular abnormalities are related to inflammation in diabetes. We will characterize the function of endothelial cells in diabetic nerve by taking out the rat sciatic nerve, isolating the endothelium, culturing endothelial cells, then extracting the supernatant to measure the chemokine and cytokine levels in both naive and diabetic rats.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Final grade shall be based on an evaluation of laboratory (or equivalent) performance (40%), a final written report (50%), and an oral presentation (10%) by the supervisor.
Project status: This project is taken; however students may contact the professor to discuss other possible '396' projects this term.
