Project title: Functional study of PKLR mutations and association with malaria resistance
Project description (50-100 words suggested): PKLR encodes for the erythrocyte-specific isoform of the pyruvate kinase (PK-R) enzyme. Mutations that alter the functional activity of this enzyme result in PK-deficiency, the most common cause of nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia. Recently, PK-deficiency was associated with resistance to malaria. Several PKLR mutations were identified within two populations living in malaria endemic regions. By examining the effect of these mutations on PK-R activity, we seek to determine whether these mutations have a deleterious effect on enzyme function resulting in PK-deficiency, which may be associated with resistance to malaria.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): 50% Laboratory performance, 50% Written report
Project status: This project is taken; however students may contact the professor to discuss other possible '396' projects this term.
