Project title: Computer-control of microscopy machines
Project description: The Leslie biophysics lab is implementing a free-source software called Micromanager to control microscopy instrumentation. A senior CS/BIO student has kick-started this project for his senior thesis but is graduating. We are looking for a keen, computer-savy student to continue this work, which is at the center of the development of our new microscopy stations. The student would learn to control and automate microscopy instruments and experiments, working with instrumentation such as CCD cameras, lasers, nano positioning stages, syringes, fluidics components, and precision optical elements. The student would join a dynamic research team in Rutherford physics composed of physicists, engineers, biologists, and computer scientists. We are looking to find a keen student who is excited to work along side a team of full-time researchers throughout the summer. We would be delighted to offer extended research opportunities in the fall and spring, which use and develop this control system for new kinds of biophysical measurements. Ideally the student would be available to be mentored this spring, before the 396 project begins, and commence at the start of May.
Prerequisite: 2 terms completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.6 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): 25% Lab book. 25% Presentation. 50% Report.
