Project title: Making Maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background
Project description (50-100 words suggested): The Planck satellite recently released mm-wave all-sky maps. Over 8% of the sky, the South Pole Telescope (SPT) has more sensitive and higher resolution maps, but for technical reasons the large-scale (degree scale) features have been suppressed in the maps. The student will combine the Planck and SPT maps to make the best possible mm-wave map that combines the large-scale information from Planck with the fine-scale information from SPT. This will require developing new tools in signal processing to effectively deal with spatially varying scale-dependent noise. This map will be used to measure fundamental cosmological parameters and make a map of the mass distribution in the universe that will be the best map (lowest noise and highest resolution) to date.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Final grade will be 100% based on the final report.
