Project title: A genetic screen for regulators of glial subtype differentiation in Drosophila
Project description (50-100 words suggested): Interactions between neurons and glial cells are critical for the development, function and maintenance of the CNS.We are using Drosophila as a model to understand how glial cell subtypes emerge from intrinsic genetic programs. These subtypes can be can be identified based on their morphologies and molecular markers, but little is known about but little is known about the genetic and molecular programs that give rise to their mature properties and functions in larvae. In this project we will use RNA interference to screen approximately 200 candidate genes for their roles in the differentiation and morphogenesis of astrocyte-like and ensheathing glia in Drosophila.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): 50% Research, 50% Final Report.
