Project title: Modulation of Macrophage Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase by Malaria Metabolic Waste
Project description: During the course of malaria, the causative parasite Plasmodium feeds on red blood cells hemoglobin and releases in circulation its metabolic wasted name hemozoin (an inorganic crystal). This crystal is rapidly engulfed by phagocytic cells such as macrophage that in turn is activatated secreting pro-inflammatory mediators. During her project the student will monitor the activation of a group of protein named protein tyrosine phosphatases that seems to play a role in the regulation of signalling pathways involved in the induction of pro-inflammatory mediators such as IL-1 and TNF. All techniques are used on a daily basis in my laboratory and the student will have all the support from graduate students and technicians from group.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Final grade shall be based on laboratory performance as evaluated by the research supervisor (50%) and the final written research report (minimum 10 pages) graded by the supervisor and the course coordinator or the coordinator's delegate (50%).
