Project title: Micropatterning of guidance proteins for neural guidance and growth
Project description: Neuron guidance is a key process in development to generate all the proper connections present in the mature nervous system. This process was determined to be monitored by the expression of various guidance proteins. In many cases, these proteins are expressed in gradients across areas as big as a couple of centimeters. To better study the effects of these molecules in vivo, many labs have used micro fluidics to generate these gradients. The use of micro fluidics is not optimum due to the diffusion of the proteins and thereby the result of an inconsistent gradient as well as limitations in minimization of the experimental system. To investigate the role of these proteins, the Micro-and Nano Bioengineering Lab Is using micro contact printing (µCP) and nanocontact printing (ñOP) to print gradients of these proteins onto slides and investigate the effects on neural growth. The student will generate gradients of various proteins and examine the resulting neural growth patterns using microscopy.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA ≥ 3.0; or permission of instructor.
